First Responders For Kids

Planning for the First Responders For Kids event began in the Summer of 2021. One of our members proposed the idea and everyone else agreed that this event fit well with the mission of the Fertigs Community Center. We took several months to plan the first event making sure that the First Responders would be honored & highlighted properly while also giving families an environment where they could communicate, interact, and learn. Our hope from having this event is that families will gain more knowledge, understanding, & appreciation for what our First Responders do on a daily basis, and will hopefully become more comfortable with First Responders in the event that they find themselves in an emergency.

This event is free for families to attend, every child in attendance will get a number of free items from us at the Fertigs Community Center. The members of the Community Center will also have the kitchen open with a light dinner menu at family friendly prices.

Our first event was held on May 21, 2022, we had a number of local First Responders attend the event. Many shared their vehicles and equipment with the families that walked around the grounds. Some departments/offices even put on demonstrations showing kids and their parents how to properly put fires out and how to escape a building that is on fire.

Our second event was held on May 20, 2023, we had many of the same departments/offices attend and even added a few new departments. We also added a new activity to the event “Firefighter Water Battles”. We had three Volunteer Fire Departments participate in the water battles this year. This demonstration was a great show to the crowd of just how much work goes into battling a fire.
